SEO Trends For 2015

August 04, 2015 Category: Website Design

As with any other marketing strategy, SEO trends are constantly changing. To achieve the best possible rankings for your website, you need to take the time to stay up-to-date with these various trends so you don’t get left behind. Some are similar to the rules that have always been followed for boosting rankings while other trends are reactions to changing search engine requirements and preferences.

Content Is Important

For several years now, including high-quality content on your website has been an important part of SEO and that trend remains in 2015. The Hummingbird update to Google algorithms back in September of 2013 brought this trend to the spotlight and since they haven’t changed their algorithms significantly since then, it remains important. This means that instead of simply aiming to sprinkle the keywords into your writing and hope to attract visitors, you need to actually provide them with useful information. To earn a high rank, you need to answer your visitors’ questions.

Selecting Specific Keywords

The exact trends for selecting keywords have changed dramatically throughout the years and now the focus is on long-tail keywords. These are more likely to appear in searches as users begin to look for information that is more specific to their needs. Instead of using broad search terms and weeding through the results, users now prefer to select a specific search query and have fewer results that are high quality and better meet their needs. This trend also goes along with the increasing focus on quality of content as opposed to simply inserting keywords without meaning or in ways that create low-quality content. To take advantage of this SEO trend, focus on picking the long-tail keywords as opposed to short or broad ones when using keyword planning tools.
When you opt for long-tail keywords, you will notice that you have a higher conversion rate as well. This is because your page is more likely to be exactly what the searcher was looking for. You will need to take the time to evaluate what your ideal user is looking for and incorporate those keywords or phrases into your page. Remember, however, that quality is more important than simply using keywords so make it a priority to get the conversation going on your website and then focus on keywords.

Build High-Quality Links

In nearly every aspect of SEO, the trend is now to focus on quality instead of quantity and this includes with links. If you build up weak or “fake” backlinks, you will notice a penalty to your rankings. Instead of building low-quality links, aim to focus on creating high-quality ones, even if this means you don’t get as many. Remember that simply building a back link is no longer enough if the website that mentions your page is not relevant or focused on content. Try to aim for links in content that trends on social media or is relevant. Try improving links to your website by hosting an event, sponsoring a team, creating a scholarship, getting involved in the community, or joining a business organization. Simply improving the content on your website is another great way to earn links as people will be more inclined to share if it is genuinely relevant, interesting, and useful.

Use Social Media

Social media seems to grow in popularity every year and there are now more social networks and apps than ever before. To truly help your website with SEO, you need to stay on top of this trend by encouraging website viewers to share. At the very least, this includes placing links to share the post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social networks. This remains an important part of link building and SEO.

Mobile Compatibility

Analysts will tell you that the number of people browsing the web on their computers is dropping while those doing so on their smartphones or tablets increases. In fact, last year the number of mobile searches officially became larger than those made on a desktop. This means that now SEO must include mobile compatibility to succeed. Follow this trend by making sure that your website is displayed properly on mobile devices and appealing to the users. Starting back in April of this year, Google began rewarding websites with mobile-friendly pages by higher rankings thanks to their new mobile crawler.
If you haven’t already done so, take the time to make sure that the mobile version of your website has the same usability, design, search features, and content as the desktop version. There are multiple ways to do this, including opting for a responsive design.

Use Visual-Based SEO

In the last year or so, SEO has been placing an increasing importance on visual strategies, such as video, images, and graphics. While this trend began in 2014, it has continued in full force and gained speed in 2015. Now your website will rank higher if you have these visual components as well as rich text as opposed to just the text. Don’t forget to consider YouTube videos as a great way to take advantage of social media through shares and link building.
Ease Of Use
As always, Google pays close attention to the bounce rate of websites when creating rankings in 2015. This means that you want to take any step possible to make sure that viewers stay on your website for more than a second or two. The easiest way to do this is to improve the structure of the page so it is appealing to users and easy to navigate. Work to create a clear organization layout of your website using target keywords to create a theme for each page. Don’t forget to have your URL work with you in terms of SEO. Include the page title in the URL as opposed to a random string of numbers and letters.

Focus On Security

Security is another big SEO trend so far in 2015. Google and other search engines have made security a priority, particularly among e-commerce websites and those that receive personal information from visitors for any reason. Start by making sure that your website has an “https” beginning and then take other steps to ensure your page is highly secure.
